Makati first in PH to achieve 100%RE goal for public buildings

Makati City just made history as the very first local government in the Philippines to power all of its public buildings entirely with renewable energy.

The Philippine Energy Regulatory Commission officially recognized this achievement on 19 March 2026, awarding Makati Mayor Nancy Binay a certificate during the signing of a nine-year energy supply agreement with ACEN Corp through the Retail Competition and Open Access and the Retail Aggregation Program.

154 city facilities—from the city hall to hospitals and schools—will run on clean energy from solar, wind, and geothermal sources, totaling nearly 10 megawatts of capacity.

This move is expected to save the city around PHP 300-million over the nine-year contract period. It is also expected to prevent nearly 290,000 metric tons of carbon emissions, the equivalent of taking 62,000 cars off the road or burning 108 million liters of diesel.

As part of the deal, ACEN is also installing 19 EV charging stations at city facilities at no cost to the local government.
