The ICLEI Indonesia Office and consultant PT Energi Biru Indonesia recently facilitated the kickoff meeting for the West Nusa Tenggara (WNT) Province 100% RE Roadmap Development last 22 November at the WNT Department of Energy and Mineral Resources (DESDM).

The roadmap development will be guided by the WNT Province Energy Profile and Energy Modelling documents created by ICLEI, the National General Energy Plan (RUEN), WNT Local General Energy Plan (RUED), as well as other relevant national policies

Various stakeholders at the local and national levels will also be involved to foster active and inclusive participation throughout the development process.

During the meeting, DESDM Secretary Ary Purwantini highlighted the importance of this collaborative approach, saying “We need to assure the conduct of knowledge sharing within each department, as the roadmap will guide the future actions that should be taken by all stakeholders, including those from the government, private sector, and other organizations.”

Teguh Dharmawangsa, Head of Spatial Planning Section of the WNT Province Department of Public Works and Public Housing (DPUPR) , also asserted the need to take into account the provincial and district/city spatial planning documents in the implementation of the 100% RE Roadmap.

Teguh said that considering existing spatial designations will help ease the burden on local governments as they formulate department-level strategies and activities. More importantly, this will ensure a stronger foundation for the roadmap, especially in the context of spatial designation.

Towards net-zero by 2050

Following the kickoff meeting, the ICLEI Indonesia team and WNT DESDM met with the province’s Deputy Governor Dr. Ir. Hj. Sitti Rohmi Djalilah to provide an overview of the project and its progress, as well as to reaffirm WNT’s vision towards achieving 100% community-level renewable energy status in all sectors by 2050.

Showing her appreciation for the project, Deputy Governor Djalilah said that the development of the 100% RE Roadmap is in line with WNT’s ambition of reaching net-zero by 2050.

“I hope that the project implementation team members and stakeholders in WNT will be actively engaged in the roadmap development. To achieve our goal, we also need assistance and support from the national government,” she added.

The deputy governor’s endorsement is expected to further rally support from WNT’s administrative divisions and stakeholders. The province’s commitment should also serve as inspiration for other local governments to take similar steps towards combating climate change.
