Tangerang is committed to reducing GHG emission through the formulation of Ikhtiar Tangerang.
Tangerang, Indonesia—ICLEI – Local Government for Sustainability, Yayasan ICLEI Indonesia, in coordination with the city government of Tangerang organized the first public consultation as part of the Ambitious City Promises project on 29 August 2019 at the Tangerang City Government’s Office.
This event aimed to identify and discuss ideas and actions in supporting low carbon development in Tangerang City. These inputs will be used towards the formulation of Ikhtiar Tangerang (Promise of Tangerang)- an integrated climate action plan that underscores actions towards achieving an ambitious mitigation goal.
In his opening speech, Mr. Arief R. Wimansyah, Mayor of Tangerang City noted that the success of addressing climate-related challenges in the city lies within the cooperation and collaboration of various stakeholders and actors, not just city officials.

Attended by more than 100 participants various sectors such as women, youth, persons with disabilities, business, non-government organizations (NGOs) and others, the activity also paved the way for these stakeholders to engage and converse with city officials. Various agencies of the local government, including Environment Agency, Regional Development Planning Agency, Transportation Agency, Housing and Settlement Agency, Public Works and Spatial Planning Agency and others agencies also attended the consultation.
During the consultations, activities, policies, and programs implemented in Tangerang that may support its goal to reduce GHG emissions were identified and inventoried in focus group discussions. The groups discussed relevant actions along the sectors of solid waste, energy, transport, air quality, green spaces, and green building.

A few notable programs include the government’s plan to promote the Bus Rapid Transportation in the city and to add four more corridors in the next five years. Citizens also reported their own means to reduce waste which include avoiding single-use plastic. Further, to reduce dependence on motorized transport, the citizens also noted that they make it a point to walk or take more sustainable forms of transportation.
