The City Biodiversity Index (CBI)—also known as the Singapore Index on Cities’ Biodiversity (SI)—is a self-assessment tool for cities to evaluate and monitor the progress of their biodiversity conservation efforts against their own individual baselines. It has been found to be useful in building the cities’ capabilities in biodiversity conservation, setting priorities for conservation actions, and fund allocation. Endorsed by the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and recognizing the critical role of urbanization in the fifth Global Biodiversity Outlook, the CBI will assist cities in implementing the Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (KM GBF).
The National Parks Board (NParks) of Singapore, ICLEI’s Cities Biodiversity Center (ICLEI-CBC), ASEAN Centre for Biodiversity, and World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF-Singapore) are working together on “Scaling the City Biodiversity Index for Effective Implementation of the KM GBF” to promote the use of the CBI worldwide.
