The Philippine local governments of the Municipality of Del Carmen and Bohol Province are calling for any donations and assistance to aid in their recovery efforts post-Supertyphoon Rai (local name Odette), which hit the Southern Philippines last December 2021. The typhoon brought torrential rains, violent winds, floods, and surges equivalent to a Category 5 storm, claiming the lives of over 400 people, injuring over 1,000 others, and leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.

The community of Del Carmen, located on Siargao Island, was especially affected by Typhoon Rai with 95% of the community having lost their homes, public facilities have been heavily damaged or completely lost, and the lives of residents have been heavily impacted.

The Local Government of Del Carmen has made efforts to ensure adequate supply of food and water, while also reestablishing a functioning public health system, immediately rehabilitating shelters, and engaging in livelihood recovery activities.

The Municipality of Del Carmen is requesting assistance for the rebuilding of health and education infrastructures, as well as livelihood support for farmers, fisherfolk, and small businesses affected by Typhoon Rai (local name Odette).

However, infrastructure issues still need to be addressed given the heavy damages to health centers, educational facilities, and other public buildings to provide quality public services. There is also a need to relocate the families at risk in identified danger zones prior to the next typhoon season from November to February. Additionally, various other social, economic and environmental challenges affecting the island’s children, families, micro-businesses, and public services remain to be top priority items on Del Carmen’s road to recovery.

Provincial Government of Bohol

The Province of Bohol needs housing, food, and water assistance for over 289,000 households affected by Typhoon Rai (local name Odette).

Given the Typhoon’s Radius of around 450-kilometers, the entirety of the Bohol island was devastated, with over 289,000 homes destroyed. The province of Bohol is thus in need of housing assistance for over 88,500 households (~24% of population) whose homes were totally damaged and over 200,500 households (~53% of population) whose homes were partially damaged. Additionally, the province also needs additional food and water supplies for its displaced residents.
