RENEW-SEA brings energy stakeholders together through new regional Community of Practice

ICLEI has launched the Renewable Energy Exchange Community of Practice (R-EnEx CoP) through the RENEW–Southeast Asia (RENEW-SEA) project, providing a platform where energy stakeholders and practitioners can engage in peer learning, dialogue, and collaboration on sustainable energy topics.

Accessible on LinkedIn via https://www.linkedin.com/groups/13118477/, the R-EnEx CoP is open to national, regional, and local authorities; private sector; youth; academics; non-profits; and civil society organizations across Southeast Asia and the world.

Membership in the R-EnEx CoP is free.

ICLEI Southeast Asia will regularly share updates, learning opportunities, and resources through the platform, while members are encouraged to actively contribute discussions and experiences that can help move the region’s sustainable energy transition forward.

Climate change calls for a rapid shift toward net-zero emissions by 2050. Cities are critical to this transition as they account for over 60 percent of global greenhouse gas emissions and over 75 percent of primary energy use.

While local and regional governments are piloting renewable energy solutions and policies at their level, lessons from these are often dispersed. Corresponding opportunities to learn from real-life examples are therefore lost and disaggregated. The R-EnEx CoP seeks to bring these government-led experiences together with perspectives from other stakeholders.

Implemented by ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability since 2024, the RENEW-SEA project works to strengthen policy momentum, technical capacity, and advocacy opportunities for subnational governments in Indonesia and Malaysia. Until 2025, the project also engaged local governments in Thailand to open discussions on renewable energy at the local level.

This 2026, RENEW-SEA will place a strong focus on the concept of positive energy buildings to empower local and regional governments in Indonesia and Malaysia to act with the resources at their disposal to drive the sustainable energy transition in their territories.
