Plastic pollution has become central in today’s world, with a devastating impact on our environment. Local and regional governments (LRGs) are among the first to be concerned by this phenomenon. Yet they are nowhere to be seen in the negotiation, which aim at providing an international framework to prevent and address plastic pollution.
This discussion, which will take place on 20 January 2023 at 14:00, will look at the following questions:
- What does this negotiation imply?
- What are the next steps?
- If this is a classical traditional interstate negotiation, what can LRGs do?
- How to include LRGs and issues of relevance to them in the text of the convention?
- What can be done to ensure implementation of the convention at the local level once adopted?
