The recently concluded COP27 marks ICLEI’s 27th year of participation in the Conference of Parties, making ICLEI the oldest local and regional government organization participating in the summit.
Since the inaugural 1992 COP, ICLEI has served as the focal point for the Local Government and Municipal Authorities Constituency, one of nine stakeholder groups recognized as essential partners in implementing the global sustainability agenda in the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC) climate negotiation process.
Building on last year’s success in Glasgow, ICLEI has again organized the LGMA Multilevel Action Pavilion, the home of cities and regions in the Blue Zone.
Some of the key outcomes achieved by ICLEI and the LGMA include:
- Launch of the Sustainable Urban Resilience for the next Generation (SURGe) Initiative which seeks to transform cities into sustainable urban systems through multi-level governance.
- A full day at COP dedicated to nature and biodiversity
- Showcased the importance of sustainable food systems
- Launch of the first annual report of UrbanShift, a global platform supporting cities around the world in adopting integrated approaches to urban development.
- Launch of a paper on climate emergency finance
- Launch of ICLEI’s vision on youth engagement in global climate action
