Source:\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/probolinggokota.go.id\/peringati-hari-lingkungan-hidup-sedunia-tanam-seribu-mangrove-di-pantai-permata-pilang\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Probolinggo City Government<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/h6>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Probolinggo City, Indonesia, has officially become the 17th ICLEI member from Indonesia and the 67th member in Southeast Asia, joining a global network of local governments working together to build more sustainable, livable communities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Covering about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/dpuprpkp.probolinggokota.go.id\/page\/geografis#:~:text=Wilayah%20administrasi%20Kota%20Probolinggo%20terdiri,Kecamatan%20Kanigaran%20(10%2C653%20km2).\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>56.67 square kilometers<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">,<\/span> Probolinggo is a compact coastal city in East Java, home to around <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/probolinggokota.go.id\/profil\/kondisi-demografi\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">243,050 people<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> as of 2023. It features mangrove forests, vibrant coral reefs, and diverse marine biodiversity\u2014though it&#8217;s increasingly vulnerable to climate change and sea level rise.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Probolinggo stands out for its bold commitment to becoming a climate-resilient city, taking proactive steps in both climate change mitigation and adaptation. Source: (instagram.com\/beejaybakauresort)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Its local environmental leadership has earned national recognition as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/index.php\/2024\/12\/18\/probolinggo-city-leads-the-way-in-sustainability-winning-opcc-and-wlc-2024\/\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>the winner of the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) <\/strong><\/span><\/a>for\u00a0<span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u00a02023-2024\u2014in a program co-organized by WWF, ICLEI Indonesia, and CDP Asia Pacific. The city also gained global recognition by winning the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/WeLoveCities\/videos\/congratulations-to-probolinggo-global-winner-of-we-love-cities-2024after-a-thril\/8762955293790912\/\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong><i>We Love Cities<\/i> (WLC)<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> competition in those same years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">These achievements highlight the city\u2019s effort to reduce plastic waste by 5 tonnes per month, expanding green open space to 30% to improve residents\u2019 quality of life, and promoting ecotourism through tree-planting efforts across 29.95 km\u00b2 of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bappedalitbang.probolinggokota.go.id\/2016\/03\/ada-hutan-mangrove-di-kota-probolinggo\/\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>mangrove forest in Permata Beach and BJBR<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span> Favoring nature-based solutions (NbS), mangrove forests stretch along the coast of Probolinggo City, forming a coastal green belt that acts as a greenhouse gas absorber.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Probolinggo City first laid out its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/jdih.probolinggokota.go.id\/app\/home\/download\/506\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">climate action plan in 2013 through Mayor Regulation Number 37<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">,<\/span><\/strong> outlining plans to reduce emissions and adapt to the climate crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Dr. Aminuddin, the new mayor of Probolinggo City who started his term in 2025, is building on the city\u2019s work to become more sustainable and climate-friendly. Source: ICLEI Indonesia<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The city is also actively involved in environmental ministry programs such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/dlh.probolinggokota.go.id\/detail\/penyerahan-penghargaan-dan-pembinaan-program-kampung-iklim-proklim-kategori-utama-sertfikat-dan-adiwiyata-jawa-timur-tahun-202\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">ProKlim\/ Climate Villages<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/dlh.probolinggokota.go.id\/detail\/rangkaian-kegiatan-pemberian-penghargaan-adiwiyata-mandiri-dan-adiwiyata-nasional-tahun-2024\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">Adiwiyata<\/span><\/strong><\/a>, and Eco Pesantren, which promote environmental stewardship. In addition, the Environmental Agency of Probolinggo City leads several innovative,<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/index.php\/2023\/06\/01\/how-grassroots-climate-action-is-helping-probolinggo-meet-its-climate-commitments\/\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"> community-based climate action initiatives<\/span><\/strong><\/a>.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> These include <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Si Mak Ngebor Lober<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which creates large biopore holes to improve water absorption; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jepanik<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, an organic waste collection service; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Jepanas<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which supports waste banks by collecting recyclables; <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Kang Say<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, which encourages home-grown vegetables in Kampung Jati; and a project in Sumber Wetan that transforms wood waste into household tools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">As part of the city\u2019s NbS efforts, maggot cultivation using black soldier flies has helped set up a facility that brings together local communities and private partners to turn food waste into sustainable nutrition.
