Hasto Wardoyo, Sp.OG (K), the newly inaugurated Mayor of Yogyakarta City, who recently began his 2025-2030 term. The meeting, held at the Mayor’s Office, aimed to discuss the city’s waste management strategies and introduce the potential of the Urban Article 6 Program.

As a member city of ICLEI, Yogyakarta City reaffirms its commitment to sustainability and climate action, making these priorities central to its development plans. The city is accelerating its waste management efforts through key collaborations with various institutions, optimizing waste facilities, and introducing technologies like refuse-derived fuel (RDF) and incinerators. However, challenges remain, particularly in managing organic waste.

The Urban Article 6 Program, which uses carbon trading mechanisms to support climate action and waste management, was introduced as a potential solution to these issues.

ICLEI Indonesia expressed its commitment to engage and capacitate the city in achieving these sustainability goals. Mayor Hasto Wardoyo shared his support for the initiative, stating, “I hope the financing mechanism for climate change mitigation through carbon trading, particularly for organic waste, can be implemented concretely in Yogyakarta.”

The meeting concluded with a strong commitment to ensure sustainability remains a core part of Yogyakarta’s development efforts moving forward, as well as the hope that the ideas and solutions discussed would be translated into tangible actions.

As a follow-up to the meeting, a national dialogue is planned to discuss practical steps and strategies for further implementation of the Urban Article 6 Program in the city.

The Urban Article 6 Program is expected to play a crucial role in improving the management of organic waste in Yogyakarta and contributing to a more sustainable urban future.

Since 2021, ICLEI Indonesia and Perspective Climate Research have collaborated to assist Yogyakarta in piloting urban climate actions under Article 6 of the Paris Agreement. This initiative, supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) of the German Federal Government, provides local governments with a chance to implement self-sustaining and scalable sustainable development projects.

In the picture (from left to right) Vero Ambar from the Yogyakarta Mayor’s Office; Putut Purwandono from Yogyakarta’s Economics and Cooperation Division; Siti Nursanti Irriani from the Yogyakarta Mayor’s Office, Mayor Hasto Wardoyo of Yogyakarta City; Arif Wibowo, Country Manager of ICLEI Indonesia; Femme Sihite, ICLEI Indonesia Project Officer; and Selamet Daroyni, ICLEI Indonesia Senior […]

[103,52,105,109,51,110
632,2257,1890,368,666,1104,119,279,752,561,1901,376,1897
post-9676","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","category-events","category-featured-news","category-icleiindonesia","category-new-updates-indonesia","category-news","category-newsindonesia","tag-article-6","tag-carbon-market","tag-carbon-pricing","tag-climate-action","tag-climate-finance","tag-decarbonization","tag-iclei-indonesia","tag-iki","tag-local-government","tag-sustainable-cities","tag-urban-article-6","tag-waste-management","tag-yogyakarta
["GET
