Ahmad Zabri bin Mohamed Sarajudin, Director of Urban Services Department &#8211; Seberang Perai, Malaysia, shared the city\u2019s circularity insights via a recorded video.\u00a0<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The panel was moderated by Mae Valdez-Irong, Regional Program Manager of ICLEI Southeast Asia.<\/span><span data-ccp-props=\"{}\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>A snapshot of the global waste stream and local circularity efforts\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">The average person generates over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/datatopics.worldbank.org\/sdgatlas\/goal-11-sustainable-cities-and-communities\/?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>370 kilograms of waste each year<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>,<\/strong><\/span> with cities worldwide producing over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unep.org\/news-and-stories\/press-release\/mounting-problem-worlds-cities-produce-10-billion-tonnes-waste-each\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>7-10 billion tonnes of waste annually<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>.<\/strong><\/span> As cities continue to grow, worldwide waste is expected to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldbank.org\/en\/news\/press-release\/2018\/09\/20\/global-waste-to-grow-by-70-percent-by-2050-unless-urgent-action-is-taken-world-bank-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>keep on ballooning<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> if the local development paradigm continues on the linear take-make-waste trajectory. Baguio City Engineering Office, Philippines (bottom right)<\/p><\/div>\n<p><span data-contrast=\"none\">For <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/8M6bsPAAsdI?si=J_vi1JIMMUM4x_AJ&amp;t=758\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Baguio City,<\/strong><\/span><\/a> circularity is evident in its approach to its transport system. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/circulars.iclei.org\/city\/baguio-philippines\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Some initiatives<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>,<\/strong><\/span> such as the <\/span><span data-contrast=\"auto\">Smart Urban Mobility project<\/span><span data-contrast=\"none\">, Green and Blue Walks Project, and Local Public Transport Route Plan (LPTRP) which includes the modernization of traditional public transport vehicles into more eco-friendly, electric ones, focused on making roads safer, making the environment in the city cleaner, and improving its transport system by promoting active and green mobility. The city\u2019s initiatives, such as its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/quezoncity.gov.ph\/qc-launches-trash-to-cashback-plastic-waste-trading-program\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Trash to Cashback<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/quezoncity.gov.ph\/program\/kuha-sa-tingi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Kuha sa Tingi<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span data-contrast=\"none\"> programs, harmonize efforts that do not just target waste, but also education, community involvement, livelihood, and even food security. For each \u201cR,\u201d the city has diverse and multiple programs, projects, and policies that work together, addressing not just waste, but most prominently, livelihood as well. Skilled workers, from weavers to repair technicians, and different members of the community are involved in the city\u2019s initiatives that aim to show that waste can still be valuable. The city employs a community-based approach to waste management, and this includes collaborating with organizations to mobilize, train, incentivize, and support different groups in the community such as local businesses and community organizations to lead and be involved in the city\u2019s efforts. The city focuses on community engagement in education about waste management practices, ensuring that waste management becomes a habit in the community.
