Higher unemployment rates, lack of livelihood,\u00a0 and stay-at-home mandates saw community members finding hope in an unlikely place\u2013textile waste.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">In 2021, the number of unemployed individuals in Bogor City reached <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/megapolitan.kompas.com\/read\/2021\/11\/11\/20101191\/pengangguran-di-kota-bogor-naik-126-persen\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>12.6% or 175,000<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> individuals due to the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">Despite being a thriving village in Bogor City, thanks to its vibrant small and medium enterprises economy (UMKM) prior to COVID-19, Sindangsari Village was not excluded from the economic impact of lockdowns. Poverty rates of low-income households in Sindangsari doubled in number, from <a href=\"https:\/\/megapolitan.antaranews.com\/berita\/222053\/mengenal-lebih-dekat-kampung-perca-sindang-rasa-kota-bogor\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">581 to 1190 households<\/span><\/strong><\/a> during the first year of the pandemic.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">The impact of the pandemic steered the village to finding ways to alleviate the worsening poverty situation. The residents\u2019 solution? The classes utilized sacks of scrap cloth\u2013called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">perca <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">in Bahasa Indonesia\u2013from his warehouse and turned them into valuable textile goods.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">After receiving positive responses from the community, Bu Nining, Head of Sindangsari Village (RW 01 Sindangsari), helped promote and grow the group to 15 housewives.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cCOVID-19 was very unexpected. While it was hard to adjust to the unthinkable circumstances, we\u00a0 still wanted to create something positive for our neighborhood,\u201d said Mardianto in Bahasa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">He has since allocated a dedicated sewing workspace and gallery corner for the community in his workshop.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI\u2019ll do what I can do for my community as long as I\u2019m not being asked to present a proposal. I\u2019m most definitely not good at it,\u201d joked Mardianto, saying he prefers to work behind the scenes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Circularity to boost creativity, livelihood, and sustainability<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">When asked about the reason for utilizing textile waste, Bu Nining explained that Sindangsari Village was already known for its sustainability efforts in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"><a href=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/index.php\/2021\/11\/10\/bogor-city-uses-domestic-waste-to-generate-clean-energy-for-cooking\/\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>waste management<\/strong><\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cWe are aware that textile waste is one of the growing issues affecting the environment. We see repurposing garment waste as a sustainable option for alternative livelihoods. Instead of adopting a traditional, linear business model, we want to utilize the existing waste materials to create something new and useful,\u201d explained Bu Nining.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.europarl.europa.eu\/news\/en\/headlines\/society\/20201208STO93327\/the-impact-of-textile-production-and-waste-on-the-environment-infographic\"><strong><span style=\"color: #00ccff\">Textiles<\/span><\/strong><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\"> are some of the most common landfill wastes. On average, the community is able to use anywhere from 10 to 30 sacks of garment textiles on a busy week, with the number varying based on the amount of incoming orders. Last December 2022, the community worked with a local designer, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/umkm.kompas.com\/read\/2022\/11\/04\/111800883\/adrie-basuki-berdayakan-perempuan-di-bogor-lewat-zero-waste-fashion?page=all\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff\"><strong>Adrie Basuki<\/strong><\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">, who aims to have a zero-waste production process for his patchwork design collection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400\">\u201cI personally feel grateful for the program and its achievements. During the pandemic, many families faced economic hardships because they were forced to stay at home. At the time, we learned to sew various products.
