As the region\u2019s population continues to grow, cities must work towards being safer and more inclusive spaces where young people are empowered to meaningfully contribute to the sustainable development of their communities.<\/p>\n<p>This is one of the key messages of the recently concluded online discussion \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=DbzvbUQiRLI\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Youth-driven actions for sustainable local development in Southeast Asia<\/strong><\/span><\/a>\u201d held in the sidelines of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.unescap.org\/events\/2023\/apfsd10-side-events-person-and-virtual\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>10th Asia-Pacific Forum for Sustainable Development<\/strong><\/span><\/a> on 30 March 2023.<\/p>\n<p>The event served as a platform for the exchange of knowledge, experiences, lessons learned, and best practices for people-centered, multi-stakeholder-driven, and youth-oriented sustainable development actions being undertaken throughout cities in the region.<\/p>\n<p>It featured key insights from the <a href=\"https:\/\/s2cities.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>Safe and Sound Cities (S\u00b2Cities)<\/strong><\/span><\/a> programme areas of Bandung City, Indonesia and Baguio City, Philippines.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_7874\" style=\"width: 1290px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7874\" class=\"wp-image-7874 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/S2Cities_10th-APFSD_Baguio-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"1280\" height=\"720\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/S2Cities_10th-APFSD_Baguio-1.png 1280w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/S2Cities_10th-APFSD_Baguio-1-300x169.png 300w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/S2Cities_10th-APFSD_Baguio-1-768x432.png 768w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/S2Cities_10th-APFSD_Baguio-1-1024x576.png 1024w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/S2Cities_10th-APFSD_Baguio-1-958x539.png 958w\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 1280px) 100vw, 1280px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-7874\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Arch. Donna Tabangin, EnP, the City Planning, Development, and Sustainability Coordinator, talked about the various opportunities and programmes that the city offers to the youth, as well as the efforts being made by the government to ensure their safety and security. We are the ones who have spirit and fresh new ideas that could help our community in overcoming current and future challenges,\u201d said Ihsanti.<\/p>\n<p>Bandung is one of the pilot programme areas of S\u00b2Cities, having begun programme activities in <a href=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/index.php\/2022\/06\/01\/iclei-and-bandung-city-sign-agreement-to-improve-urban-environment-for-the-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>April 2022<\/strong><\/span><\/a>. Meanwhile, Baguio officially became a part of the S\u00b2Cities\u00a0global network of programme cities <a href=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/index.php\/2023\/03\/21\/baguio-is-first-ph-city-under-global-s2cities-program-set-to-make-city-safer-in-partnership-with-youth\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\"><strong>earlier this 2023.<\/strong><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The side event was jointly organised by the Children and Youth Constituency for Sustainable Communities (CYCSC), ICLEI &#8211; Local Governments for Sustainability Southeast Asia, and the United Nations Human Settlements Programme (UN-Habitat) in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>Serving as co-organizers were the City Government of Baguio &#8211; Philippines, World Resources Institute- Indonesia, and the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization Office (UNESCO) in Vietnam.<\/p>\n<p>S\u00b2Cities is a global programme aiming to improve the safety and well-being of young people in urban environments in secondary cities. It is an initiative proudly led by the Global Infrastructure Basel Foundation, in partnership with ICLEI, hosted by Swiss Philanthropy Foundation, and supported by Fondation Botnar.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Southeast Asia currently has an approximate youth population of over 213-million, 40% of which live in urban areas.
