23 participants from 20 Bogor-based waste banks and food businesses participated in the training on BSF organic waste management held by ICLEI Indonesia.<\/strong><\/h6>\n

Over 50%<\/span><\/a> of solid wastes generated in the whole of Indonesia and over 60% in the West Java Province are of the mixed organic variety. Cities such as Bogor have been <\/span>utilizing various solutions<\/span><\/a> to combat its waste generation. These include hydro-pyrolysis technologies and <\/span>biogas digester systems<\/span>.<\/span><\/span><\/a><\/p>\n

To further bolster the city\u2019s circular transition, ICLEI Indonesia last 22 March 2022 held a training on black soldier fly (BSF) composting systems involving 20 representatives from Bogor\u2019s waste banks and food business sectors.<\/span><\/p>\n

“This waste processing activity using BSF aims to reduce the amount of waste taken to the final waste disposal site, as well as create socio-economic benefits for the community,” explained Nisa Nidasari, Local Government Associate of ICLEI Indonesia.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Going from a linear buy-use-waste trajectory to a recycling and circular economy adds value to every process carried out, while also ultimately reducing generated wastes,\u201d added Nidasari.<\/span><\/p>\n

Black soldier flies are a type of insect whose larvae can be used to recycle organic waste. The final products of this process include protein-rich maggots which can then be used as poultry feed. Moreover, BSF processing also produces fertilizer byproducts which can support urban agricultural activities.<\/span><\/p>\n

The training saw the participants learning about BSFs, their life cycle, how to use them in waste processing, and their co-benefits. They also saw firsthand how BSFs process organic wastes in the Bogor City Environmental Service Office facilities. Lastly, they learned about the best practices in waste processing as implemented at TPS 3R Mutiara Bogor Raya.<\/span><\/p>\n

“Hopefully, this activity will motivate waste bank and food business actors to process organic wastes on-site in order to help lessen the city\u2019s total generated wastes,” remarked Ir. Tety Sovia, M.S, Secretary of the Bogor City Environmental Service.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Bogor City local government has already started using BSF processing at its TPS 3R (Reduce-Reuse-Recycle) Waste Processing Site in Paledang. This circular solution is also being implemented at other 3R polling stations in collaboration with the Community Self-Reliance Group (KSM).
