{"id":6687,"date":"2021-11-02T10:04:42","date_gmt":"2021-11-02T02:04:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/?p=6687"},"modified":"2021-11-02T10:04:42","modified_gmt":"2021-11-02T02:04:42","slug":"iclei-invites-southeast-asian-cities-to-rebuild-better-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/index.php\/2021\/11\/02\/iclei-invites-southeast-asian-cities-to-rebuild-better-together\/","title":{"rendered":"ICLEI invites Southeast Asian cities to rebuild better together"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">\u201cWhile we must prioritize efforts to address the COVID-19 pandemic, we must not forget to continue and strengthen efforts to overcome another crisis facing humanity\u2014the climate crisis.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">This was the message of Mr. Victorino Aquitania, Regional Director of ICLEI \u2013 Local Governments for Sustainability Southeast Asia Secretariat (ICLEI SEAS), during the organization\u2019s recently concluded webinar aiming to inspire SEA local governments to take leadership to combat the climate and ecological crisis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Conducted virtually last 15 October 2021, the \u201cRebuilding Better Together: Platforms for Low-Emissions, Resilient, and Nature-based Development\u201d webinar gathered over 260 representatives from over 90 local governments throughout Southeast Asia. The event consisted of three technical sessions, each dedicated to these three ICLEI-led initiatives: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.citieswithnature.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Cities With Nature (CWN)<\/span><\/a>; <a href=\"https:\/\/www.c40knowledgehub.org\/s\/cities-race-to-zero?language=en_US\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Cities Race to Zero (CRtZ)<\/span><\/a>; and <a href=\"https:\/\/citiesracetoresilience.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Cities Race to Resilience (CRtR)<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">It was co-organized by the City Government of Makati, Philippines and the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council, Malaysia<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Reintegrating nature into urban development<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6690 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-958x719.png 958w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2-800x600.png 800w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/2.png 1600w\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">The session on CWN featured discussions from Ms. Ingrid Coetzee, Director\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">of Biodiversity, Nature, and Health of the ICLEI Global Cities Biodiversity Center and ICLEI Africa Secretariat; Ms. Stefania Romano, Global Coordinator of Cities With Nature and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regions With Nature; and Councilor Amanda Stone of Yarra City, Australia.<\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Discussing the importance of nature in sustainable development, Ms. Coetzee said \u201cLife depends on nature. Not only will we lose our economies because we will no longer have natural resources, but without clean air or water, life as we know it will stop.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">As such, protecting the urban biodiversity should be one of the immediate concerns of local governments moving beyond this pandemic. CWN serves as a platform where governments embarking on this journey can network and utilize proven tools and resources in their nature-based development efforts.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">\u201cCWN has a commitment platform where stakeholders can pledge their local targets,\u201d said Ms. Romano. \u201cThey can then move towards achieving these via our tools and resources hub.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">\u201cSoon, we will also have a City Biodiversity Index tool, where cities can do baseline measurements of their current biodiversity profiles and then monitor and assess them over time,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Councillor Stone attested to the importance of joining CWN in Yarra\u2019s reintegration with nature. She said \u201cWe just joined two years ago, but we\u2019ve already got policies and action plans to share on the CWN registry. The resources provided are also really excellent, helping us restore habitat values along the Yarra River and bringing nature back into harsh urban environments using nature-based solutions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Eliminating emissions one sector at a time<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6691 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-958x719.png 958w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3-800x600.png 800w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/3.png 1600w\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">The CRtZ session was led by Mr. Cesar Carre\u00f1o, Head of Climate Data at ICLEI; and TPr Mr. Rozaidi bin Mahat, Head of Sustainability at the Hang Tuah Jaya Municipal Council.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">The Race to Zero campaign hopes to halve global emissions by 2030 and achieve net-zero by 2050 by rallying climate leaders from both the public and private sectors.There are currently over 1,000 cities and regions from all over the world who have pledged to reach net-zero as soon as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">\u201cRace to Zero is an initiative that sets a criteria, timeline, and framework towards greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction and avoidance,\u201d explained Mr. Carre\u00f1o. \u201cICLEI then provides guidance to help climate targets thrive and grow beyond mitigation.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">One of the Southeast Asian cities which has recently pledged to CRtZ is Hang Tuah Jaya (HTJ) in Malaysia. Signing in June earlier this year, HTJ is now consolidating all city initiatives related to climate change towards this commitment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Answering what benefits cities can get from joining CRtZ, Mr. Rozaidi said \u201cThis initiative helps us speed up the implementation of climate actions, as well as provides us a reporting platform through which we can share our initiatives to the world. In doing so, we can gain global recognition for our local efforts.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">He added, \u201cThe most important part is that cities all over the world can work together to fight climate change. Through CRtZ, we can form a community where we can support each other.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #333333;\"><strong>Developing holistic resilience<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-6692 size-large\" src=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-1024x768.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"680\" height=\"510\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-1024x768.png 1024w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-300x225.png 300w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-768x576.png 768w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-958x719.png 958w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4-800x600.png 800w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/4.png 1600w\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 680px) 100vw, 680px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Heading the CRtR discussions were Dr. Kate Strachan, Senior Professional Officer for Climate Change and Coastal Management of the ICLEI Cities Biodiversity Center and ICLEI Africa; and\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Honorable Abigail \u201cAbby\u201d Binay, Mayor of Makati City, Philippines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Cities, being home to over half of the world\u2019s population, are at the forefront of experiencing climate disasters. Dr. Strachan shared that by 2050, over 970 cities around the world will see summer temperatures of around 35\u00b0C. Over 800-million urban residents will also be affected by coastal erosion and flooding in the same period.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">As the sibling campaign for CRtZ, CRtR aims to rally leadership and support from cities, regions, businesses, and investors to help build cities\u2019 resilience and enable them to adapt to the impacts of climate change.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">\u201cJoining CRtR allows cities to have access to the best planning resources, helping them better integrate climate change adaptation and resilience into all aspects of urban planning,\u201d said Dr. Strachan. \u201cThey can also share their best climate resilience practices and demonstrate their city\u2019s leadership in this global movement.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">Echoing this statement, Mayor Binay said \u201cThe CRtR offers a valuable platform for knowledge and learning exchanges that will inspire innovation and foresight among cities in the crafting of policies and action plans geared towards resilience and sustainability.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400; color: #333333;\">The Makati Mayor added \u201c Being part of this global movement has exponentially increased our chances of succeeding, not only in realizing our climate goals, but also our sustainable development goals.
