Quezon City, Philippines \u2013<\/b> The local government unit of Cauayan City\u2014considered as one of the \u201cFirst Smarter Cities in the Philippines\u201d\u2014is serving as a success story of how the country’s cities can integrate energy efficiency and conservation (EEC) into their development plans.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharing the city\u2019s EEC initiatives last 15 July 2021 during the <\/span>Luzon Energy Efficiency and Conservation Forum 2021<\/span><\/a>, Cauayan Mayor Bernard Dy provided a presentation on how the city localizes the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and how it treats EEC as a way of life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

His presentation included the city\u2019s <\/span>climate-friendly policies, programs, and investments, all aimed at reducing energy consumption, most especially in the transportation sector which contributes the highest greenhouse gas emissions (GHG) in the locality.<\/span><\/p>\n

The most notable climate action steps of Cauayan include: (1) the CharM Project, which allows public e-vehicles in the city to charge in minutes; (2) the Hybrid Electric Road Train, which provides free rides to passengers in the city from Mondays to Fridays; (3) a waste-to-energy facility; and (4) internet-of-things (IoT) technology for aquaponics, which provides a systematic monitoring of temperature, water level, humidity, and dissolved oxygen of aquaculture areas in the city.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The city also currently has a memorandum of understanding between the Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Isabela State University (ISU), the Smart Cities Council (SCC), and the Smart Cities Network (SCN) for the \u201cSmarter and Sustainable Cities in the Philippines\u201d project. Moreover, the city is working with DOST for the Hybrid Electric Road Train (HERT).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

The experience of Cauayan City demonstrates that EEC investments and partnerships are readily available in the country, ready to be utilized by LGUs looking to implement sustainability and EEC projects in their cities.<\/span><\/p>\n
