Pasig City, Philippines \u2013<\/strong> As part of the <\/span>Ambitious City Promises (ACP)<\/span><\/a> project, the ICLEI – Local Governments for Sustainability Southeast Asia Secretariat (ICLEI SEAS) formally handed over green building infrastructure solutions and an online citizen climate action pledge platform to Pasig City, Philippines last 5 July 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n

Conducted under the ACP sub-component <\/span>\u201cPasig RECharge! Pilot Implementation of the Local Green Building Ordinance of Pasig City<\/span><\/i>,\u201d the infrastructure project located in Barangay Sta. Rosa, Pasig serves to demonstrate various climate action steps that exemplify the city\u2019s commitment to low-carbon development.<\/span><\/p>\n

During his acceptance speech, Pasig City Mayor Vico Sotto emphasized the importance of the city\u2019s present climate action steps. He said \u201cClimate change and environmental issues have a real impact on everyone. For example, when there’s flooding. If we don’t change our ways, this problem will only worsen. We need to do what we can now to solve this.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Specifically, the following infrastructure measures were implemented as project activities: (1) 12.16 kWp rooftop solar energy system, (2) 2,000L portable biogas digester located in the barangay\u2019s materials recovery facility (MRF), (3) efficient LED lighting and air conditioning system, and (4) rainwater harvesting facility. These will help Barangay Sta. Rosa be more efficient in its energy and resource use.<\/span><\/p>\n

The rainwater harvesting facility provides an alternative water source for some of the barangay\u2019s facilities, including water closets, faucets, and the like.<\/p><\/div>\n

Barangay Sta. Rosa Captain Mr. Arcel Umipig, said during his acceptance of the project, \u201cBeing the pilot area is a great deal. We commit ourselves to sustaining this project. We will maintain and take care of it so we can help in reducing local greenhouse gas emissions.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

Currently, the energy sector is the most significant contributor to the overall GHG emissions of Pasig City. In 2017 alone, this sector was responsible for 86% or 1,275,277.99 tCO2e of the city\u2019s overall emissions.<\/span><\/p>\n

Making local climate action inclusive<\/strong><\/h2>\n

Moreover, the handover ceremony also served as the venue for the memorandum of understanding (MOU) signing for the <\/span>Pasig EcoPledge Platform<\/span><\/a> between the Pasig local government and ICLEI SEAS. The MOU formally hands over the administration and maintenance of the citizen-oriented EcoPledge platform to the Pasig local government.<\/span><\/p>\n

Pasig City Ecology and Environmental Protection Committee Chair Councilor Editha Santiago highlighted the importance of this inclusivity, saying \u201cLet us all join forces and unite for environmental action.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

The 2,000L portable biogas digester located in Barangay Sta. Rosa\u2019s materials recovery facility allows the barangay to utilize waste materials in the production of methane, which can then be used as an LPG alternative for cooking.<\/p><\/div>\n

The Pasig EcoPledge Platform allows citizens to promise their own climate actions under three categories: energy efficiency and conservation, solid waste management, and transport and air quality. It enables Pasig\u2019s overall climate targets to be cascaded to individual stakeholders, encouraging them to live a more sustainable lifestyle alongside their city\u2019s sustainable development thrusts.<\/span><\/p>\n
