{"id":4750,"date":"2019-07-10T07:00:24","date_gmt":"2019-07-10T07:00:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/icleiseas.org\/?p=4750"},"modified":"2019-08-05T05:41:23","modified_gmt":"2019-08-05T05:41:23","slug":"thirteen-philippine-cities-join-wwfs-one-planet-city-challenge-answers-the-call-for-making-ambitious-climate-actions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/index.php\/2019\/07\/10\/thirteen-philippine-cities-join-wwfs-one-planet-city-challenge-answers-the-call-for-making-ambitious-climate-actions\/","title":{"rendered":"Thirteen PHL cities take on WWF-ICLEI challenge"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Pasig City, Philippines \u2013 World Wide Fund for Nature (WWF)- Philippines in partnership with ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability Southeast Asia Secretariat kicked-off this year\u2019s One Planet City Challenge (OPCC) in an updating workshop held last June 4, 2019 at Linden Suites, Pasig City.<\/p>\n<p>Participating cities of this edition include Batangas, Cagayan de Oro, Pasig, Para\u00f1aque, Quezon, San Carlos, Santa Rosa, and Tagum; all of which have previously joined earlier rounds of OPCC.<\/p>\n<p>In addition to the eight cities who participated in the workshop, five new cities are also joining this year\u2019s OPCC, namely Davao City, Dipolog City, La Carlota City, Malolos City, and Muntinlupa City.<\/p>\n<h4>The role of cities in addressing climate change<\/h4>\n<p>Atty. Gia Ibay, Head of the Climate and Energy Programme of WWF Philippines, presented the key findings of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ipcc.ch\/sr15\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">IPCC Special Report on Global Warming of 1.5\u00b0C<\/span><\/a> in light of new data on the current status and projections on climate change.<\/p>\n<p>The report underscored why it would essential for humanity&#8217;s survival to keep global warming to 1.5\u00b0C and why drastic, ambitious actions are required from both national and local governments.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_4753\" style=\"width: 4984px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4753\" class=\"wp-image-4753 size-full\" src=\"http:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_2086.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"4974\" height=\"3678\" srcset=\"https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_2086.jpg 4974w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_2086-300x222.jpg 300w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_2086-768x568.jpg 768w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_2086-1024x757.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/icleiseas.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/07\/IMG_2086-958x708.jpg 958w\"  sizes=\"(max-width: 4974px) 100vw, 4974px\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-4753\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Project Manager of WWF-Philippines Imee Bellen explained that aside from challenging local governments to make ambitious actions to address climate change, OPCC also gives a platform for cities to be recognized for the innovative and valuable work that they do to forward environmental sustainability.<\/p><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Through <a href=\"https:\/\/wwf.org.ph\/what-we-do\/climate\/opcc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">OPCC<\/span><\/a>, participating cities shall be able to showcase their share of commitments and actions to contribute to the global efforts to address climate change. The challenge also serves as a platform for cities to recognition from the international community and share inspiration to other local governments. OPCC also fosters peer-to-peer knowledge exchange&#8211;allowing participating cities to learn from each other and pick up replicable solutions which they can apply to their own contexts and challenges.<\/p>\n<h4>The CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting Platform<\/h4>\n<p>ICLEI SEAS, in the same activity, introduced the newly-launched <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdp.net\/en\/articles\/cities\/cdp-and-iclei-a-unified-climate-reporting-platform-for-cities\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">CDP-ICLEI Unified Reporting System<\/span><\/a>; a platform where participating cities can report their commitments and actions to address climate change. The unified platforms affords the cities the convenience of reporting only once and have their data shared to affiliated networks including the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.globalcovenantofmayors.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">Global Covenant of Mayors for Climate and Energ<\/span><span style=\"color: #00ccff;\">y<\/span><\/a>, ICLEI, and WWF\u2019s OPCC.<\/p>\n<p>Ms. Pamela Cabacungan, Project Officer for Mitigation of ICLEI SEAS provided an overview of the platform including its features as well as the reporting process and requirements for OPCC. This was followed by a hands-on exercise wherein ICLEI SEAS helped the participants to navigate through the platform and input their climate data as their entries to the competition.<\/p>\n<p>In the context of OPCC, participating cities are required to submit their reports through the platform in order to be considered as official competitors.<\/p>\n<p>The cities\u2019 profiles uploaded to the platform will be the basis for evaluation by WWF\u2019s international jury. This evaluation determines the winners of this edition.<\/p>\n<p>WWF Philippines and ICLEI SEAS will be visiting first-time competitors in the succeeding weeks to deliver technical assistance in using the CDP-ICLEI Unified Platform.
