ICLEI Southeast Asia (SEA) recognized the City Government of Makati in the Philippines as one of its active, longstanding members by presenting a membership plaque received by the Makati City Administrator, the Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO), and the International Relations Department last April 13, 2026 at the Makati City Hall.<\/span><\/p>\n

During ICLEI SEA\u2019s courtesy visit, the Makati City DRRMO also welcomed the fellows of ICLEI\u2019s Enhancing Local Capacities in Socially Inclusive Resilience in Asia (SIRA) Project for a brief knowledge-sharing session on Makati City\u2019s disaster resilience system.<\/span><\/p>\n

Liza Velle B. Ramos, EnP, Makati City DRRMO Research and Planning Division Chief, led the knowledge-sharing session, highlighting the city\u2019s approach of localizing the Sendai Framework for DRR.<\/span><\/p>\n

ICLEI SEA awarded the membership plaque as part of a series of activities for its 21st anniversary celebration, including recognition of its members.<\/span><\/p>\n

Makati City has been involved in notable ICLEI projects over the years, starting with ICLEI SEA\u2019s first project, the Cities for Climate Protection Campaign from 1999 to 2005.<\/span><\/p>\n

Makati City was also part of the Asian Cities Climate Change Resilience Network (ACCCRN) from 2012 to 2016 as one of the 15 project cities in the Philippines, under which cities were assisted in developing plans for sustainable development, poverty alleviation, and climate resilience, and the ICLEI-ACCRN Guide and Toolkit was refined and tested.<\/span><\/p>\n

In recent years, Makati City has been part of the One Planet City Challenge (OPCC), the flagship activity of the World Wildlife Fund’s (WWF) One Planet Cities (OPC) program. The OPCC is a biennial global challenge that aims to develop and disseminate best practices in climate mitigation and adaptation for cities worldwide by encouraging participating cities to report their climate actions, strategies, and data through a standardized international platform. The OPCC was brought to the Philippines in 2013, and since then, WWF-Philippines has partnered with ICLEI SEA as its technical implementation partner.<\/span><\/p>\n
