Good news came from Fortaleza, Brazil in June 2019. Jakarta won the “Honorable Mention” award at the Sustainable Transport Award (STA) 2020. The award was won because Jakarta was considered successful in developing the Transjakarta Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system and successfully increasing the number of passengers to 200 percent in less than three years.

The awarding ceremony will take place at the Annual Transport Research Board Meeting in Washington DC, in January 2020. The STA event will give appreciation to cities in the world for implementing innovative strategies on sustainable urban transportation. The vision, concept, and execution of each city is assessed by a committee consisting of the Institute for Transportation and Development Policy (ITDP), the World Bank, the ICLEI-Local Governments for Sustainability, and others.

“The Sustainable Transportation Award demonstrates the political will that (the city government) puts in a precise solution to improve the city environment,” said Aimee Ganthier of the 2020 Sustainable Transport Award Committee.

In this event, Jakarta was nominated with 12 cities such as Richmod (United States), San Jose (Costa Rica), Kingston (Canada), Bogota (Colombia), and others. Furthermore, Jakarta entered the semi-final stage and finally won the top three positions with Pune (India) and Kigali (Rwanda).

ITDP states that Jakarta is considered successful in integrating the BRT system with microbial services (angkot) and the first metro system that provides additional modes of public transportation. Jakarta has also been successful in improving facilities and pedestrian access to public transport stations and stops and creating hubs to integrate various modes.

The Governor of DKI Jakarta, Anies Baswedan, stated that the achievement was a worldwide recognition that Jakarta was on the right track to overcome chronic challenges. “All of us are serious about getting recognition from credible institutions at the world level. This is not through a lot of voting on social media, but this recognition is obtained from the Sustainable Transport Award,” he said.
